David Dixon for Barbie: Fall/Winter 2009

My latest piece for slice.ca...

A couple of weeks ago, I brought you the Barbie shoe collection by Town Shoes and in true Barbie fiftieth anniversary spirit, I discovered another Barbie collaboration this past weekend at The Barbie Signature Shop located in the Bay's Toronto Queen Street location. For a limited engagement of two months, this Barbie pop-up store will showcase designer Barbie dolls, Barbie jewellery, Barbie furniture, Barbie home furnishings, Barbie clothing and everything Barbie.

Canadian fashion designer David Dixon participated in the Barbie fiftieth anniversary celebration by designing a special Barbie clothing collection that will be sold exclusively at Bay stores this fall. Princess coats, Fifties party dresses, skirts, flirty cocktail dresses, sleeveless blouses, elegant evening gowns and a dress made of layered black discs were some of the pieces on display at The Barbie Signature Shop. Magenta, pink, black and white were the predominant colors of this collection and luxurious tweeds, chiffons, taffetas, and silks were the fabrics of choice for these pieces. Overall, the pieces that were on display are completely wearable and in line with the Bay's fashion style. My favourite pieces were the tweed jackets and the evening gowns. Although this collection was inspired by Barbie, I can easily envision Michelle Obama or any other high ranking socialite in these outfits. Fifty years later, Barbie is still fashionably relevant and a style icon.
