Madonna, Hitler, and John McCain

Here it is, the highly talked about and controversial video montage from Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" tour in which John McCain's image is associated with Hitler. The footage of Hitler and McCain spans from 0:57 - 1:17 in this video.

It is clear that Madonna is a democrat and that she loves to freely express her opinion. This video definitely functioned to get her even more press and publicity and, to be honest, I wouldn't expect anything less from the queen of mass media manipulation. It really isn't that controversial and I think that Madonna could have been more controversial if she ran the image of Hitler on one screen and had John McCain's image simultaneously on another screen. She loves to "push people's buttons" and she has, once again, successfully turned some people on and off. I applaud Madonna for doing what she does best - being provocative and challenging her audience to think.

Karl Lagerfeld Teddy Bear

The extents to which the Karl Lagerfeld brand ventures never ceases to amaze me. In his newest endeavor, a collaboration with German plush toy company Steiff, the Kaiser of high fashion is immortalized as a couture teddy bear. Karl's trademark black suit, sunglasses, and belt are incorporated into this plush representation of the fashion icon. My question is, where is Karl's FABULOUS trademark fan? This teddy bear is incomplete without Karl's trademark fan! If Kimora Lee Simmons' Barbie doll can have a dog, then Karl's teddy bear should definitely have a fan. Designer toys by high fashion ateliers are definitely something that have not been done yet and I can totally envision Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci, emblazoned teddy bears and toys. Question is, how many parents would pay the higher price point for a designer teddy bear or would these toys be intended strictly for collectors and adult consumers?

Comme des Garcons for H&M

Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons has collaborated with H&M for their next designer diffusion line which will hit select H&M stores in November. I am a huge fan of designer collaborations and I applaud H&M for selecting Rei Kawakubo. Comme des Garcons is definitely one of the more visionary and cutting edge fashion houses in terms of design and use of textiles. I have a feeling that the women's collection will be way better and more interesting than the men's collection as women's wear is more conducive to the Comme des Garcons aesthetic of "outside of the box" construction and tailoring. I look forward to the interesting silhouettes and the innovative textiles that will be used in this collection.

Trans-Contestant on America's Next Top Model Cycle 11

America's Next Top Model cycle 11 will feature transgender contestant Isis Tsunami. I applaud Tyra for providing a transgender individual the opportunity to become America's Next Top Model (AMNTM), but is America and Cover Girl cosmetics ready for a transgender top model?

This is definitely a marketing strategy to help boost viewership and ratings of AMNTM, as the past few seasons of AMNTM have been trite and mediocre at best. Isis is definitely FIERCE and can WORK a runway (see videos above), but as much as we'd like to believe that reality TV is real and regardless of how talented and supermodel-esque Isis is, I have a feeling that the producers of AMNTM will eliminate Isis from the competition by episode 5 or 6 because to keep her in the running until the end and not have her win would just be disheartening and cruel.

Brenda Walsh Returns to 90210

Shannen Doherty returns to Beverly Hills in the new 90210 spin off, premiering this fall (September 2, 2008), as a drama teacher. Brenda Walsh, the queen of drama on the original series, was the only reason I ever watched 90210 in the first place. The original 90210 was socially conscious and explored many relevant topics and issues which pertained to teen lives, such as: alcoholism, gambling, teen pregnancy, sexuality, drug abuse, etc... It will be interesting to see if the new spin off will be as socially relevant and compelling.

Eva Mendes for Calvin Klein - Banned Commercial

This is the new commercial for Calvin Klein's newest women's fragrance "Secret Obsession" featuring Eva Mendes and it has been banned due to a quick flash of Eva's nipple. Another celebrity actress turned fragrance model, Eva Mendes is smoking hot in this commercial and she is a classic beauty. Kudos to Calvin Klein for choosing a voluptuous latina to be the face of this new fragrance. Beauty comes in all ethnicities, shapes, and sizes and it is refreshing to see that CK has moved in this direction for the ad campaign of this fragrance. As for the nipple slip, it is completely intentional and serves to fuel controversy and garner publicity. As the saying goes, "All publicity is good publicity, as long as they spell your name right."
