"Tyra" The Brand


Tyra Banks is featured on the cover of the most recent issue of the New York Times Magazine and it has an in depth interview and article about how Tyra has established herself as a brand to be reckoned with. Like Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey, Tyra has definitely forged a media identity and a coinciding lifestyle associated with that identity. Tyra the identity is: a strong independent woman of color motivated to inspire and empower all women to better themselves, to be true to themselves and to follow their dreams. Tyra the lifestyle is: self-aware, self-confident, self-fulfilling, intelligent, beautiful, fashionable, and fierce. Every project that she is involved in, whether it be her daily talk show or America's Next Top Model, reinforces the Tyra mission of self-discovery and self-fulfillment with a prerequisite touch of fierce-ness to invigorate.

Strategically, Tyra has identified her niche: self-empowerment, and her target market: women who identify with the Tyra mission; now, she just needs to focus and exploit these assets to their fullest. It will be interesting to see just how far the Tyra empire expands - will she come out with her own magazine? Create a diffusion fashion line? Produce movies of the week? The possibilities are endless for Bankable productions and Tyra has definitely come along way since her days on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Tyra has thought outside of the supermodel box and her career longevity is a testament to her intelligence and business savvy. She has absolutely worked hard for the money and is the queen of smiling with her eyes!

Batman Does Milk


I came across this clever new cross promotion with the new Batman the Dark Knight movie and Body by Milk. This is a great way to reach a segment of the marketplace that traditional celebrities may not necessarily have access to because the character of Batman is accessible to target audiences on a variety of levels. Whether it be to identify with Batman, to romanticize with Batman, to emulate Batman, to be "cool" like Batman, or to obey Batman - target audiences will be drinking their milk.

I also love the fun and engaging copy that the advertising team came up with, "Others reload. Batman refuels. Research suggests that milk's unique mix of ingredients can help you recover after exercise. And its protein can help build muscle. So train hard and drink low fat or fat free milk because the Batmobile isn't the only thing that needs to refuel."

Lacoste Reinvents Tennis 75 Years Into The Future


I came across this video that Lacoste has created in honor of the brand's 75th anniversary. It is envisioning tennis in the year 2083, 75 years into the future, and how it will be played. I love the concept and the look that Lacoste has created for this endeavor. The future tennis sport outfit is cutting edge and definitely fashion forward - I especially love the footwear! Dior Cells


Following in the footsteps of Prada and Armani, Dior has just launched their own designer cell phone branded as "My Dior". Roughly the size of a USB key it features a camera, a touchscreen display, and it is meant to clip onto your purse/bag and intended to be worn for quick and easy access (similar to the idea of how an ipod shuffle would be clipped somewhere easily accessible). However, the suggested retail for this item is $5000 so I'm not sure if I would wear it somewhere it could easily get lost or snatched, but it would definitely be an extravagant accessory. It is interesting that the major fashion ateliers have expanded their empires to now include cell phones and it will be interesting to see the extent to which cell phones may be designed.

DJ Go Portable Turntables Concept


I stumbled across this portable turntable concept and I think that this is definitely the direction that turntable/DJ equipment is moving. DJ Go is comprised of two MP3/CD decks and has it's own built in mixer and folds up for easy storage and transport. I love the design and concept and would definitely look to hook myself up with one of these, unfortunately, there are no plans to start production of this product. It is only a concept at this point......

Melanie C - Toronto May 8, 2008

I had the fortune and pleasure of attending the Melanie C show here in Toronto (thanks AMZ!) on May 8 and it was a moving and intimate experience. The venue, the Phoenix, is one of my favorite venues because it allows the audience to get up close and personal with the artist due to its size and layout. Mel C performed a majority of tracks from her new album, "This Time", and all of her hits from prior albums. The energy of the crowd was amazing and the diversity of fans in attendance was comforting as everyone was there because of their love for Sporty Spice. She has always been my favorite Spice Girl because of her vocal ability (she is the only one of the Spice Girls that can actually sing) and this quality has definitely propelled her as a solo artist and endowed her with career longevity. Her vocals were spot on and, in her performance, we truly got to see Melanie C the solo artist and not Sporty Spice one of the Spice girls. It is this distinction, Melanie C the solo artist, that will set her apart from the rest of the wannabes and a title which she has rightfully earned.

Yay to Melanie C for thinking for herself!!!
