Kate Moss is featured in the Just Cavalli Spring/Summer '09 ad campaign. Looks like Kate will continue to shine in '09.

Hedi Slimane for Prada SS 09

Hedi Slimane injects the Prada Spring 09 ad campaign with some punk rock chic by capturing Prada-clad Louis Simonon and Claude Simonon (sons of The Clash's bass player and manager Paul Simonon) "in moments of reflection and introspection".

You would never guess that these two youths had never modeled before and this ad campaign illustrates how seamless Hedi Slimane's transition has been from former creative director of Dior Homme to high fashion photographer. Hedi Slimane is definitely capable of, and he has already begun, making men's high fashion cool and coveted again. Although he isn't designing skinny jeans, smoking coats, and dressing Pete Doherty anymore - he is shaping and forming an aesthetic of how rock stars should look and be understood in the media.

Raf Simons Does Denim For Jil Sander Spring 09

Raf Simons, creative director for Jil Sander, has extended his genius to denim for Jil Sander Spring 09. Off-white, blue, and gray denim will be tailored and structured into slim five pocket and boot-cut pants and skinny two-button lightly shoulder padded blazers. I have never entertained the notion of owning a denim blazer, but I am definitely feeling this fashion forward aesthetic!

Diesel's Foot Fetish Ad

Diesel has always had interesting and thought provoking ad campaigns and their latest ad featuring an elderly foot fetishist being gratified by model Jon Kortajarena’s Diesel high-top sneakers continues to challenge comfort zones and push buttons. The whole point of this new ad campaign is to "intrigue and provoke thought". I LOVE it!

Apparently, films surrounding each new ad image will be available on the Diesel web site.

Luxury Bottled Water

My latest piece for slice.ca....

Just in time for the holidays, French mineral water brand Evian has collaborated with Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacroix to design special luxury bottled water. Two bottle variations have been designed by each designer: a limited edition Haute Couture bottle and a regular Pret-a-porter bottle. (Read more)

Madonna for Louis Vuitton

Madonna stars in the new 2009 Louis Vuitton ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel. When looking at these ads one can truly appreciate the magic known as Photoshopping as Madonna is 50 years old and you can not see a single line on her face. We all know and get that Madonna does yoga and that she is flexible, but is it really necessary for her to always have her legs in the air?

Nonetheless, Madonna will definitely influence the sales of Louis Vuitton with this ad campaign.

Punisher War Zone Review

The Punisher War Zone picks up 6 years into the Punisher storyline. Frank Castle (Ray Stevenson), a.k.a. the Punisher, continues to enforce his vigilante style of justice on mobster families in order to get the bad guys that always find a way to beat the system. During an attack on a mob party, the Punisher unknowingly murders an undercover FBI informant and later in the same attack, he severley disfigures the face of one of the leading mafia gangsters - Billy "The Beaut" Russoti (Dominic West). This facial mutilation leads the gangster to proclaim his new villain name, Jigsaw. These two events set up the plot of the film as the Punisher learns of his wrongful kill and his ensuing remorse leads him to want to leave the punishing business, but he can't because the monstrous looking mobster Jigsaw is alive and seeks revenge on the FBI informant's wife and child and revenge on the Punisher for being the cause of his disfigurement. Predictably, the dead FBI informant's wife and child get kidnapped by Jigsaw and in order to save them a huge war-like battle ensues between the Punisher and Jigsaw's army of mobsters, gang-bangers, and thugs.

This film falls under the Marvel Knights brand which is basically the grittier and darker division of Marvel comics. Marvel Knights products are intended for a maturer 15 years or older audience so that the stories and characters may be re-envisioned without the limitations on explicit content that are in place with the regular Marvel brand. The Punisher War Zone definitely exercised pulp style violence and gore to the point of gratuitousness. Perhaps the excessive and gratuitous violence will create box office interest because overall the story was predictable, the script and acting was painful at times, and the film was 20 minutes too long. I would recommend this film if you are in the mood for a mindless shoot 'em up massacre, otherwise wait for the dvd so that you have the options of fast forward or doing something else while you watch it.

Lady Gaga - Toronto 11/30/2008

I saw Lady Gaga perform here in Toronto the other night at Circa nightclub. As this was a club performance/PA, she only performed for 30 minutes and the show was basically one big medley or megamix of her hits and potential singles from her album. It was refreshing to see her in an intimate environment, although Circa, the venue, is not conducive to concert live performances as the layout of the venue is too obtrusive and junky. Perhaps that's why it was a brief half hour set. I was over it before the show even started due to the constant battle of having to weave through the crowd and the inability to properly see the stage.

Lady Gaga's performance was definitely FIERCE, innovative, creative, visionary, intimate, engaging and performance art - it's too bad that many of the people there, including myself, did not get to fully enjoy her show. The highlights for me of her performance were the incorporation of her self-made props into her performance (her disco stick - a stick with a disco ball light, and the infamous sunglasses that flash LED words) and the rapport that she had with her fans. There were many hardcore fans in attendance and I am glad that she did not disappoint them in any way and she even signed autographs for them during her performance!

Lady Gaga has class, style, ferocity, and she is a talented performer who moves beyond traditional pop acts by embodying pop and artistry in all respects. Thanks to Youtube and a hardcore fan - you can view the concert above to get a feel for the Gaga madness that went down that night!

World AIDS Day 20th Anniversary

Red Ribbon Awarenes Decoration from Toronto

20 years ago today, the World Health Organization declared December 1, 1988 the first World AIDS Day. This is a special day in which individuals and organizations unite globally to bring attention and awareness to the AIDS epidemic.

I remember the first World AIDS day and at that time HIV and AIDS was highly stigmatized and only associated with homosexual men or intravenous drug users. As a result of the ignorance and inaction surrounding the AIDS crisis, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) formed in order to bring awareness to the epidemic - "ACT UP is a diverse, non-partisan group of individuals united in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis. We advise and inform. We demonstrate. WE ARE NOT SILENT." ACT UP was the first HIV/AIDS awareness organization and it was definitely instrumental in paving the way for other HIV/AIDS awareness related organizations.

Governments and public authorities turned a blind eye to the AIDS crisis in 1988 and it is only now, 20 years after the fact, that this epidemic has started to be taken seriously. AIDS has touched all of our lives in one way or another, whether personally by losing a loved one or a friend or indirectly through the loss of an artist, musician, actor, celebrity, writer, poet, politician, or by anyone who has made a difference in the world and made it a better place on any level. Let's not forget all the people the world has lost to AIDS and let's educate, inform, and prevent any further unnecessary losses to this epidemic.

Dirk Bikkembergs' Golden Underwear

Dirk Bikkembergs' limited edition golden underwear ad campaign is interesting to say the least. The "Antwerp Six" designer always has interesting and provocative ad campaigns and this campaign definitely speaks to a variety of audiences and markets. Hypermasculine or homoerotic or both? Interesting.....

Gucci Tattoo Heart Collection feat. Rihanna

Gucci has designed this special collection of white handbags and accessories featuring a tattooed heart graphic surrounded by trademark Gucci symbols. 25% of sales from this collection will be donated to the Gucci Campaign to Benefit Unicef which supports orphans and children in Africa affected by HIV/AIDS and provides them with healthcare, education, protection, and clean water initiatives. The collection will be available globally from November 19, 2008 - January 31, 2009.

I applaud Gucci for this charitable venture and I applaud Rihanna for using her celebrity status to support and raise awareness for such a great cause. Socially conscious luxury goods definitely help to alleviate consumerist guilt and I have a feeling that this Tattoo Heart collection will quickly sell out.

Takashi Murakami Animation Studio Opening Soon in LA

Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is set to open an animation studio in Los Angeles next year under the name of his production and artist-management company Kaikai Kiki. Murakami is the Japanese Andy Warhol and his pop art has globally impacted pop culture as we know it. He created his own pop art style, known as "superflat", which incorporates graphic character art derived from Manga and anime on flat planes of bold color. His pieces speak to and about consumerism, sexual fetishism and the "otaku" culture in Japan which is a culture which revolves around an obsession with video games, Manga, and anime. On this side of the Pacific, Murakami is known for his pop art bags and wallets for Louis Vuitton and for his collaborations with Kanye West on West's album covers and music videos.

I love all of Murakami's work and he is truly a 21st century visionary - creatively and artistically. He has the potential and ability to shape and move pop culture in a new direction that would redefine and raise artistic standards and notions of art in general. All of his pieces move beyond mere eye candy and the visual sensory overload which ensues upon articulating a Murakami piece may be understood as Murakami's signature style - you can't resist the impression or impact that each of his pieces makes. As with all great art, you either get it or you don't.

Nike "Playstation 3" Blazer High Tops

Nike has made these Playstation 3 inspired Blazer high tops which incorporate the brand's colors into the detailing of the sneaker. Gamers and gaming are a multi-billion dollar industry and Nike is smart to try and tap into this market by doing something as simple as using the Playstation 3 colors in one of their many shoes and referencing the brand in the shoe's name. A clever collaboration that will definitely be coveted by gamers around the world.

Couture Money - Coco Chanel 5 Euro Coin

Karl Lagerfeld has designed a 5 Euro coin to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Coco Chanel. Available on December 1st, only 99 pieces of the gold coin will be made at a purchase price of 5900 Euros and 11900 pieces of the silver coin will be made and sold at a significantly lower price of 45 Euros.

This is as close to coutured money as we'll get and Chanel loyalists, fashionistas, and coin collector's will snatch these up in a flash. This year the high fashion ateliers have truly expanded their empires from teddy bears, cell phones, water bottles, cameras, and now to designer money. Is it excessive to have luxury money? Apparently, the Kaiser and Chanel don't believe so and acquiring these coins is the ultimate act of conspicuous consumption.

Urban Fashionista's Winter Style Tips

My latest piece for slice.ca...

This past weekend was the first bitterly cold weekend here in Toronto and everyone was bundled up and dressed to battle the elements. Winter is definitely my least favorite season of the year because staying warm and maintaining a sense of personal style can be a bit of a challenge due to the limiting nature of winter attire. Ski jackets, ski gloves, and moon boots are perfect for a weekend skiing getaway, an Arctic excursion, or for extended hours in the cold, but on a day to day basis these articles can be a bit excessive and unwarranted. In order to stay stylishly warm this season I recommend the following winter style tips and trends: (Read more)

Alexander McQueen For Puma Promo Videos

I came across these promotional videos for the Alexander McQueen for Puma 2008 collections. In true McQueen style, these videos are sleek, innovative, visionary and totally COOL!

I have secretly been coveting the pointy sneakers, but I would be happy with any piece from these collections. The design of these shoes easily allows for style versatility - from casual to dressy, day to evening, gym to work, or dinner to the club. Alexander McQueen is slowly expanding his empire and his next collaboration will be with retail giant Target in 2009.

Kate Moss the Siren

My latest piece for slice.ca...

A few weeks back, I was in London, England for some rest, relaxation, and shopping! I used to live in London and this was the first time that I had been back in ten years. It was refreshing to be back in the British capital and I realized just how much I missed London street style. London is a fashion and style mecca and anything and everything goes in this huge cosmopolitan fashion mish mash. I started to think about Britain's contributions to fashion and style and looks and people that came to mind were: punk, mod, glam rock, Vivian Westwood, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Burberry, and Kate Moss.....(Read More)

Dolce and Gabbana/DandG Cruise 2009 Ad Campaigns

These are the ads for the Dolce & Gabbana and D&G 2009 cruise collections. I find the fact that designers create cruise collections interesting because these "cruise" collections are merely extensions of their Spring/Summer collections. Re-branding extended pieces of their Spring/Summer collection as "cruise" wear somehow imbues these swimsuits and beachwear with luxury and glamour. Clever marketing...

Claudia Schiffer is featured in the Dolce & Gabbana campaign and she is another 90's supermodel featured in a major ad campaign. This is just another indication that the 90's are truly coming back in full force.

Paul Smith for Lomography Cameras

Hipsters and fashionistas will all be adding this Paul Smith fisheye Lomo camera to their Christmas wish lists this year. Lomo cameras allow users to take creative photographs by means of their unique cameras which are specially constructed to create a specific desired photographic result. Fisheye lenses (which allow for super wide angle exposures), multiple exposures, different colored exposures, split images, and many other creative photographic effects can be achieved with Lomo cameras. You can find these cameras at select photography stores or at Urban Outfitters.

Paul Smith is definitely a kitsch and visionary brand and the this collaboration with Lomo is fitting. Designer collaborations are definitely the way of the future and this point in time is clearly the beginnings of designer collaborations that move beyond fashion.

Kate Moss for Topshop: X-Mas 2008 Collection

The Kate Moss and Topshop diffusion collection has been invigorated for the 2008 holiday season. As usual, pieces of this collection sold out within hours. I love all of these looks that she has come up with for Topshop and the impact that she has on her own collection is interesting. Apparently, she wore one of her own dresses (the panther dress) to a Vivian Westwood show and this dress was the most coveted piece of the collection and sold out instantly. Kate Moss continues to be a fashion powerhouse, whether it be modelling or "designing."

Chanel's Gun Inspired Heels

Karl Lagerfeld has pushed the envelope once again with these gun heeled shoes for the Chanel Cruise 2009 collection. These will definitely be a collector's item and the perfect heel for all Bond girls.

I have a feeling that the influence of James Bond and the new Bond film, Quantum of Solace, will not only significantly impact pop culture, but fashion as well. It will be interesting to see which other ateliers delve into espionage and spy chic in the upcoming fashion seasons.

Lucian Matis - Spring 09

A piece I wrote for slice.ca...

Fashion week favorite and Project Runway Canada alumni Lucian Matis shared his visionary showmanship by transporting us to another time and place reminiscent of a high glamour French resort with his Spring 09 show.

The show was set to the soundtrack of seagulls and an accordion melody and the sounds foreshadowed the ensuing collection...(Read more)
